Abarra
A ferry connects harbours, enables exchange – and thus progress. It effortlessly crosses the open water between man-made borders. This symbol reflects the creative self-image of Abarra, who named themselves after the Arabic word for ferry. Three people, three countries of origin, three classical music training programmes at three different universities: This list gives an impression of how diverse Abarra's cultural background is – and how colourful the music that emerges from this background sounds. Plucked instruments such as oud and saz as well as folkloric singing set a clearly oriental tone, into which the deep, soft sound of a viola flows. With clarinet, saxophone, and bassoon, the whole thing soars into almost orchestral dimensions. Added to this is an electronically generated groove that throbs under the fusing harmony like a healthy, powerful heartbeat – archaic, ritualistic, and at the same time as modern as it can be. In the universal language of their music, which can be understood by everyone in dance, Abarra tell us everything there is to discover on a shared crossing.
