Ammoye
Not many people would make an immediate connection between Jamaica and Canada, especially when it comes to contemporary reggae combined with sleekly produced neo-soul. Ammoye, however, has written this combo into its musical profile and has been blessed with a string of artistic successes all over the North American continent for years. From the Grammy Showcases in LA, the opening night of the JUNO Awards or two concerts at COMAfest in Brazil: with her dynamic vocals on top of furious reinterpretations of reggae, dancehall and Afropop, she inspires her audience as much as other artists, who are often queueing up to do a feature. No wonder, then, that the debut LP ‘Water’ (2021) was abundantly stacked with contributions from DJ Agile, Natural High, The Senior Allstars and Thomas Blondet and offered a stylistic range that even past greats of this genre rarely managed. Ammoye makes it all seem simple and natural, as if the various facets of their signature sound have always belonged together.
