Track by track, it has become increasingly clear in recent years that PLH is shaking up the world of German rap with the brutality of construction vehicles and is setting new standards in the industry. In combination with DJ Jiyan, the Bremen rapper succeeds in restoring local hip-hop sounds that lie somewhere between boom bap and hardcore bars in a way that has eluded the imagination of even the heaviest heads. Until the release of her debut, “Eingangsbereich” (2019), the female side of German rap music was primarily reserved for half-baked copies of fake gangster mannerisms. But Presslufthanna reset the clock and has since garnered the favour of everyone who has ever shed a tear for every ounce of lost realness between tapes by Mobb Deep and Torch. Two years ago, “So nämlich” (2022) finally marked the next step for Hanna – a woman who probably knows more about her craft than large parts of the disaster area that is masculine rap from between the Baltic Sea and the Black Forest. Nevertheless, resourceful colleagues such as Herr König, Classic der Dicke, and Mayomann & Backfischboy have realised who it is that’s drilling away at the foundations of genre conventions. If you want to experience Presslufthanna for yourself, then you’ll have to come to Hamburg in September.
