Born in excess and riding on the crest of a wave that broke out on their own, Heisskalt have probably had a more lasting impact on the German music landscape over the past decade than most of their neighbouring combos ever will. In just a few years, the Stuttgart-based four-piece earned a reputation as a first-class post-hardcore duo with albums such as their debut ‘Vom Stehen und Fallen’ (2014), and the furious follow-up ‘Vom Wissen und Wollen’ (2016), which gives the paradox of uncompromising violence and euphoric melodic peaks a forgiving formula. Quiet parts with emotional chanting and thoughtful lyrics find a place amid thunderous riffs and roaring drums in this project, which has now been reduced to a trio. It is the dysfunctionality of a broken world, the desire for excessive unreasonableness that speaks from every instrument, every line, and seeks a way into the souls of sweaty crowds. But as the existentialists' masterminds already knew, Heisskalt have also deeply internalised one thing: only those who stop searching begin to find. And so album number three follows in 2018 with ‘Idylle’, which has cathartic value for the band but is still available to download for free – the ultimate slap in the face to the industry – six years of screaming silence followed. Now they are back with ‘Vom Tun und Lassen’ and more than ready to burn down the stage in Hamburg.
