Searows
When today's singer-songwriters rave about Neil Young, Nick Drake and Elliott Smith and invoke the age-old heroes of the craft, they are justified in doing so. But when they can authentically emulate them in the creative process, that is something exceptional. That's what Alec Duckart already did all the way through his debut 'Guard Dog' (2022): the songwriting and production, recording and mixing, vocals and guitar were the single-handed work of the all-rounder from Portland, Oregon. It's not just the existentially forceful lyrics, the deeply bitter-sweet atmosphere, the raw and intimate tenor that are impressive; it's mainly the 24-year-old's angelically androgynous voice. It will surely surprise many to realise we are listening here to a young musician making his first attempts at artistic expression. This is because the EP "End Of The World" (2023) ultimately sounds like it comes from the archive of a veteran songwriter who has been plying his trade for thirty years, unfazed by any trend, hype or money in the world. Searows is a legend in the making.
