The very thing that found a passionate following in LA’s so-called Paisley Underground in the 80s is now enjoying a revival on the dark grey banks of the Rhine: Neumatic Parlo play psychedelic new wave with a Düsseldorf existentialist flair and provide the score to life in the age of “never enough time”. The quintet’s debut EP, “Parlo Alto” (2019), was released a good five years ago and defined the tonal and lyrical impetus of the quintet, showing the musical potential that comes to fruition here. Of course, the rich krautrock tradition of the state capital plays a role, but so too do British post-punk reformers such as Shame and Squid as well as the gloomy melancholia of legends such as Mazzy Star and Sad Lovers And Giants. And yet Neumatic Parlo always take sharp turns where nobody expects them, refuse to conform, and play with fresh ideas. On their debut album, “Play It As It Lays”, which will be released in October, they show that they know how to master the ride through stylistic serpentines with ease.
