Elsy Wameyo
Faith can move mountains - but in Elsy Wameyo's case, it can also result in a vocation. The Kenyan-born singer and songwriter, who grew up in Adelaide, South Australia, considers her outstanding musical talent to be God-given, regularly quoting her religion as a main source of inspiration. However, gospel, r'n'b and modern hip-hop legends such as Kendrick Lamar and Little Simz also have a big part to play in shaping Wameyo, whose studio debut "Saint Sinner" (2024) is finally set for release this year after long years of preparation and much fine-tuning. Politically engaged but also poetically adept, the DIY artist's sound is perfect enough in one moment to make any club erupt. At other times, it feels more like thoughtful jazz-pop or even existentialist rap anthems, such as the single "Sinner". The Kenyan's repertoire knows no bounds – and is brought to the stage in this style via every trick in the book.
