Stereotype
Many people can claim to be revolutionists and dissidents. But often enough, this is nothing more than mere marketing. For Meshcut and Xeen, however, pursuing their musical vision means facing actual resistance. As Stereotype, the duo from Tehran developed in an underground scene that is closely monitored by an autocratic regime that is faced with the constant threat of imprisonment or worse. The duo’s dark electronic sound design also doubtless emerged from this life experience, which has had a lasting impact on them as people and artists. On their debut EP, “Foil” (2021), this urgency and the resistance that they had to be prepared to confront day after day can be clearly heard. Last year, Stereotype decided to leave Iran and flee via Istanbul to Paris, where they now send industrial-tinged synthwave tracks from the diaspora through the European airwaves and celebrate their regained freedom.
