Without bowing to any trends, Sam Akpro managed to give his signature sound another polish last year with the single “Death By Entertainment”. The songwriter from Peckham, London, with an energetic groove that lies somewhere between alternative rock, indie pop, and dub has repeatedly made a name for himself over the last few years without resorting to promo campaigns or TikTok marketing. Fuelled primarily by word of mouth, after the release of his EPs “Drift” (2021) and “Arrival” (2023), he performed on some of the biggest stages in Europe ranging from Green Man and the Outbreak Festival to the Pitchfork Festival in Paris. Death Grips and Denzel Curry became fans for good reason after the DIY musician’s sweat-inducing shows. And now comes “Disposition”, the next unmistakable anthem for the pulsating hustle of Greater London, which can be both a lifestyle and a curse of modernity. One way or another, Akpro is sure to win over the feature pages from NME to Clash to BBC 6 Music as well as DJs such as Mary Anne Hobbs – and perhaps with a debut album coming soon. That is, if things keep going the way they’ve been going.
