Olli Schulz
The fact that Olli Schulz is virtually omnipresent in the German media circus is unlikely to have escaped anyone’s notice. The charming storyteller with a thousand titles to his name has gone from being a security guard and stagehand in Hamburg’s hazy club scene to being an entertainer in the biggest shows. How did that happen? Schulz himself will be the first to tell you that he has no idea. However, since the release of his debut album, “Brichst du mir das Herz, brech’ ich dir die Beine” (2003), it has been impossible to imagine the German indie scene or the local TV landscape without the bustling singer–songwriter. Together with Max Schröder, he occasionally turns zeitgeisty observations of everyday life into songwriting gems as Olli Schulz und der Hund Marie, and as a solo musician, he successfully removes the melancholy from the kitsch on albums such as “Feelings aus der Asche” (2015) and “Scheiß Leben, gut erzählt” (2018). And as a showman, he spices up the soup of German television tragedy. But after all, what would this country be without Olli? Who knows? Who even wants to know? He provides the answers to these questions himself with his new album, “Vom Rand der Zeit” (2024), which gives unpretentious yet deeply thought-out songwriting a new soul in Germany. As a result, his performance at Michel is sure to be a hit.
