Monika Zenkevičiūtė is passionate about drawing stylistic inspiration from all over the place. As Monikaze, she flies through genres at breakneck speed and collects whatever she can fit into the next track. Therefore, it’s hardly surprising that albums such as her debut, “Chicken Wings” (2019), or last year’s “Laws Of Distraction” (2022) are categorised online as “electronic” for lack of a better pigeonhole. And the music of the Lithuanian-born London-based jack-of-all-trades is certainly electronic. But to do justice to her artistic impetus, references to IDM and post-minimalism, art pop and raw vocal modulations are not out of place. It is no coincidence that she has supported acts as diverse as Algiers and Caribou and even the legendary Dopplereffekt. Last year, she reached the zenith of her career with the quirky, danceable “Weakness” (2023) – and that’s not just according to her: “This is the best thing I’ve done so far,” she said, and fans as well as feature pages all agree.
