King Josephine
Joey Steffens – aka King Josephine – has been on a musical journey for decades, and her debut EP hasn’t even been released yet. The daughter of Ghanaian musician Gilbert Amarty, she grew up in an artistically stimulating social environment, came into contact with diverse cultures and musical traditions, and learnt to absorb and integrate these influences at a young age. Today, her own style in songs such as her debut single – “Sweet Craving” – as well as in “Shitty Wine’ (2023) encompasses R’n’B and blues as well as pop and hip-hop in equal measure. Last but not least, she succeeds in creating a wonderfully light-footed interpretation of neo-soul that has yet to be heard in Germany. As a self-taught singer–songwriter, composer, and multi-instrumentalist, King Josephine is not only at the centre of the production process of her songs: She also knows how to address topics such as racism, mental health, and queerness in songs that are true to life and authentic.
