All too often, hip-hop from individual African countries is nonchalantly equated with hip-hop from the entire continent. But Kenya – among other countries – has an extremely independent rap scene that needs to be differentiated. KABEAUSHÉ occupies a truly special position in that scene. The Nairobi-born rapper, producer, and crate digger released two albums of bursting experimental fury last year: “The Comming Of Gaze”, and the furious “Hold On To Deer Life, There’s A Blcak Boy Behind You!” (typos intended). Industrial hip-hop collides with gqom and hip-house, pop-rap, and EDM. The result? Nothing less than a new form of ultra-danceable rap music that sounds as if the war boys from the last “Mad Max” film were celebrating a beach party with the strongest ketamine cocktails this side of Mexico City. Surreally distorted, wacky to the max, and absolutely idiosyncratic, KABEAUSHÉ blasts tracks into the ether that are sure to resonate for years to come.
