Freakin' Disco
It takes a lot for a jazz quartet to at least indirectly claim to be turning Europe’s club scene inside out. But Freakin’ Disco didn’t just succeed with their tongue-in-cheek debut, “National Jazz Fuckers” (2016), on which they blend prog rock with psytrance, psychedelic kraut sounds with techno, and ambient with space lounge: On their subsequent releases, the four musicians from Budapest also tear down all conventions that have been established in the neatly defined genre pigeonholes. But this band don’t care about style, and that’s because they really do sound like nothing else on the continent – which is exactly how they captivate tens of thousands of people at their crazy live gigs. From Sziget to Slaughterhouse and from Berlin to Brighton, Freakin’ Disco have proven with flying colours over the last few years that their style can be mastered by no one but themselves. Steve Dub (The Prodigy, The Chemical Brothers) was hired to produce the banger “Face Yourself” and to put the finishing touches to their third album, “Totem” (2023).
