Bolis Pupul
In the reconciliation of apparent opposites, Boris Zeebroek finds a musical language that masters the vocabulary of Western club sounds as well as the evocation of Eastern traditions. Having grown up in the creative hub of Ghent as the son of a Chinese mother and a Belgian father, he fuses the playful agility of synthpop with the physicality of electro house and the futuristic elegance of new beat under his alias, Bolis Pupul. The result is an idiosyncratic cross-section of cross-cultural rhythms and harmonies with an unpredictable wealth of ideas. More than a dozen high-quality singles and a fantastic collaboration with Charlotte Adigéry preceded his recently released debut, “Letter To Yu” (2024). This can also be heard on the album in all its concise stylistic confidence with tracks such as “Frogs” and “Kowloon” spinning through your head with enough centrifugal force to make any garishly glowing fairground pale in comparison. But then there are tracks such as “Cosmic-Rendez-Vous”, in which Bolis Pupul demonstrates his delicate feel for understatement and the sequencing of catchy beats. Regardless as to what he touches, the world rarely experiences a producer who is so mature and has such creativity right from the beginning of his career.
