Bertolt Meyer
It might come as a surprise that Bertolt Meyer is a real person rather than a character from a sci-fi novel. After all, the psychology professor from Chemnitz University of Technology is probably Germany’s first – and so far, likely the only – bionic DJ who creates sounds using the power of thought. How does it work? Meyer was born without a left forearm and has been living for over twenty years with a prosthesis that translates neurally generated muscle impulses into movements. In collaboration with a Berlin-based developer of electronic instruments, he devised an interface that allows him to interact with and control the synthesiser directly from his prosthesis via a cable. Parameters such as beat and tempo, pitch and effects can be influenced in this way, creating entire tracks through the power of thought. The melodic techno that Meyer creates in this way is not only highly danceable, but also borders somewhat on magic. Perhaps in ten years’ time, he will be one of the pioneers of a new kind of sound synthesis. Who knows? But one thing is certain: His live sets are already making bodies sweat.
