The analogue blends with the digital, psychedelic rock nestles up to electronic physicality: AFAR's sound brings two worlds together in a climactic encounter. The Berlin-based duo craft stylish songs packed with grace and raw energy. On one hand, they feed off the luscious vocals and guitar licks of Elena Gnieß, while at the same time drawing unbridled power from the downtempo sculptings of Joseph Varschen. Their debut album "Music From Afar" (2019) already explored this duality, offering the hazy atmospherics of an electrified blues album but also the experimentation and progressiveness of conceptual works from the 1980s. To perform this balancing act over and over again, the duo is firmly rooted in many musical traditions and always open to new ideas. Last year, their second full-length album "The Refuge" (2023) was released by Cologne-based tastemakers Laut & Luise and silenced even the lingering doubters: AFAR are a force to reckon with in the German music underground.
