Emancipation and strength are the central themes of Tara Lily’s music. The singer–songwriter and poet grew up in south London and combines expressiveness with grace while never losing sight of her British–Bengali roots. This is also reflected in her sound, which integrates R’n’B and classic jazz as well as Bengali folk and heart-rending soul. It’s therefore hardly surprising that even heavyweights such as Gilles Peterson, Iggy Pop, and Virgil Abloh have been pricking up their ears since the release of Lily’s second EP, “Last Flight Out” (2022). However, the delicate productions and soulful vocals of singles such as “Double Time” (2023) and this year’s “No Way Out” impressively emphasise that she is only just picking up speed and is hopefully set to release a full album in the very near future. She has already been signed to Motown Records. But first, she’s coming to perform for us in September.
