It’s been a rocky road for Lana Lubany. It all began with her early start as an eleven-year-old singer who performed in her hometown choir and met Barack Obama. Later, she recorded the song “The Snake”, which has been listened to millions of times. The singer with roots in both Palestine and the USA has had to battle the shoals of the international music industry as well as prejudice and racism, but through it all, she’s always remained true to herself. And that has paid off: Today, she contributes to the representation of the Palestinian diaspora in Europe and the USA and is also able to continue a musical legacy that has only reached a wider audience in Western culture in the last ten years. Arabic pop with elements of trip-hop and alternative R’n’B that also references the rich tradition of folk music from the Orient: That’s what makes Lubany’s sound so appealing and even downright sensual. Her second EP, “The Holy Land”, which was released in 2023, and this year’s singles, “Make It Better” and “Stanna”, demonstrate that this woman is only just beginning to blossom.
