Katarina Barruk
Keeping the heritage of her endangered culture alive while creating unrivalled poetic music is Katarina Barruk’s life’s work and destiny. The Sami-Swedish singer-songwriter and composer presents her art in fluent Umesami - one of the critically endangered languages in the Finno-Ugric language family. As a result, her songs sound like quasi-orchestral pop with both a historical and a futuristic character, which also integrates joik and other vocal techniques both lyrically and sonically. It is no coincidence that in recent years, she has performed at festivals with a pioneering character such as the CTM in Berlin and Polarjazz on Spitsbergen. Her most recent album, “Ruhttuo” (2022), cemented the singer’s reputation for not taking well-trodden paths and instead going her own way. Live, she is truly something special.
