Like a painter initially making sketches before actually starting to create, Sebastian Gaskin lay out their songs on the guitar and then fill the compositional forms with colour. The self-taught artist, multi-instrumentalist and producer from Toronto sometimes works with a wide variety of different tones, incorporating the technical virtuosity of John Mayer and the imagination of Bill Withers with the richly produced vocals of Post Malone or Pro Era. Otherwise though Gaskin’s music is also succinct, with highly professional arrangements. However: ‘Writing songs is something I find therapeutic,’ as Gaskin always points out. On their debut EP ‘Contradictions’ (2019), they lyrically toy with the temptations that longing can arouse in us and pour these into asymmetrical melodies over amber-coloured vocals. They’re not afraid to bare their own soul, giving their audience points to identify with and a sense of being understood. Already this year, they gave a taster of their upcoming first studio album with the two singles ‘Ghost’ and ‘Medicine’. This September, they will present their new material live at St. Pauli.
