One thing has always been clear to Sam Wills: Never doubt your own abilities, ambitions, or plans. And he’s right. After all, that attitude has made the singer–songwriter from Hastings, England, a celebrated – albeit still-criminally underestimated – up-and-coming talent in British neo-soul. Haunting falsetto-style vocals, sleekly produced beats, and the melodic sensitivity of icons of the genre who were last active in the 90s – in Willis’s music, everything that has always belonged together actually comes together. Wills is nevertheless fully anchored in the present and integrates familiar soul virtues with the charisma of a bedroom producer, the extravagance of great R’n’B numbers, and the rhythmic sensibilities of nu jazz on his debut album, “Breathe” (2021). Anyone who has ever seen the likeable multi-instrumentalist with the modest attitude live on stage will be able to confirm that this is the stuff that great artists are made of.
