Over a decade of experience and killer releases such as their “ded lake” EP (2013) or the furious self-titled album “Grimelda” (2018) mean that Blair Colwell and Skyler Cafferata have nobody left to impress. And despite the duo from Saskatoon in Saskatchewan knowing this, the twosome like periodically taking aim at themselves, as evident from the humour and irony packed into their songs. Dirty riffs, cross-produced drums and a ton of fun are part of the DNA of songs like “Uuu Oughta Know” or “Dirty Li'l Dirtbike” and are full proof that Grimelda have grown over the years as a duo while still remaining a perfect fit for the galaxy of guest musicians and other musicians accompanying them. Like two goblins on a whisky-powered ride, the pair hurtle through different styles and pigeon-holes on last year’s “It's So Feeling When You Rock!” (2023) while slicing up any conventions that hold them up on the way. Noise punk and hyper pop, Yamaha stock samples and good old rock’n’roll vibes get down and party here flanked by a resolutely anti-commercial attitude. Exactly how it should be done.
