Rarely does an artist show such a pronounced sense of tone and rhythm, harmony and arrangement, restraint and presence from their very first works. What has characterised Ganna Gryniva’s sound since the release of her debut, “Home” (2022), is the complete absence of any kind of dependence on trends or expectations. At the same time, however, she is also clearly willing to bring her cultural heritage into the here and now using contemporary production methods. The result is most impressive: A carefully composed neoclassical sound with various cultural cross-references meets nu-jazz nuances and Ukrainian folk music, which the pianist and singer breathes new life into with her deeply powerful voice. Her second studio album, “Kupala” (2023), also follows in the footsteps of this unmistakable sound language and impressively demonstrates that GANNA is set to be one of the biggest names in the European – and especially the Ukrainian – music world both now and in the future. If you don’t believe it, come and see for yourself in September.
