Edna Million
Edna Million has already shown herself to be pleasantly independent on her highly acclaimed debut album: a dark, sonorous timbre, minimalist instrumentation, and existentialist lyrics that are more spoken than sung. The 23-year-old Austrian – who is also studying historical linguistics in Gothenburg – is as far removed from the hip stadium pop of the latest generation as Vienna is from Stockholm. At least. There’s no confetti raining from the ceiling, no squeaky girly aesthetic, and love is at best the subject of sepia tones clouded by cigarette smoke. Edna Million celebrates inwards, and with this year’s debut, “The Pool”, she draws inspiration from Patti Smith instead of Taylor Swift, from PJ Harvey instead of Billie Eilish. Accompanied by the semi-acoustic cinematography to the song of the same name, she is on a collision course with the ground of reality as we can perceive it – if we listen. Her very own stylistic language may not bubble over with joy, but it shows something much more valuable: truthfulness and passion for her own creations.
