Somehow seeing meaning in everything and running counter to the turmoil of our time, swim school try to square the circle and break it in the process. Although the trio from Edinburgh celebrate slickly produced British-style indie pop, they swim against the current and define their own sound as “eclectic seduction”. The guitars are reminiscent of The Cure as well as Interpol, while the vocals and songwriting are often reminiscent of Wolf Alice, and the vibe sometimes has something of The Night Café to it. The balance between melancholy and euphoria is brilliantly held according to all the rules of the rampant post-punk revival and is redefined in every song. It should come as no surprise that their two EPs, “Making Sense Of It All” (2021) and “Duality” (2023), have turned heads in the UK in recent years. But now, with their new singles “Give Me A Reason Why” and “To Grow”, the harbingers of a possible upcoming debut album are already in the starting blocks. Hopefully, we’ll know more in September.
