At 17, life is restless, just like love, confusion, and the search for one’s own identity. It is these sorts of memories and episodes for which Suzan Köcher’s Suprafon creates songs like diary entries. The lines reach deep into the past, touch on the sincere melancholy of Judee Sill as well as on the timeless grace of Vashti Bunyan, and unite the singer’s own biography with universal truths. But as befits cult female singer–songwriters, Köcher also takes her time with her work. While her 2019 album, “Suprafon”, was a blend of alt-country, 60s psychedelia, and dream pop, her new single, “Seventeen” (2024), proves to be the logical continuation of an artistic journey into the velvet-red depths of human desires and suffering. It is presumably precisely these dualities that manifest themselves in Suzan Köcher’s Suprafon music and then exert an irresistible appeal. Basically, there’s no chance of not falling for this woman when she presents the first songs from her upcoming album on stage.
