RUBII
The bitterness in her songs is not an expression of her attitude to life, but a therapeutic processing of her experiences – or at least, that’s how Jessica Goodchild characterised her sound in a recent interview. And yes: On the one hand, the songs of the rapper from Birmingham are moody and full of a certain seriousness, but on the other hand, they represent the artistic journey and passion of a musician for whom the creative process is everything and is clearly expressed here. Her debut EP, “Olive Green” (2023), demonstrates this with remarkable stylistic confidence, combining contemporary R’n’B, neo-soul, and delicate Afrobeats but also revealing jazz sensibilities. Style is not a label for RUBII, who named herself after her favourite drink, Rubicon. Rather, her artistic modus operandi is revealed in the fact that she translates different influences into her own sound language without heeding any hypes and while maintaining a certain understatement. On her new EP, “Change & Remain” (2024), this approach is just as clear in every track as the mood-setting title promises. No wonder British tastemakers such as BBC Radio 1 are courting this musician. Nor is it any wonder that she is finally making her German debut with us in September.
