A snowy winter evening in New Brunswick, in the far east of Canada. Two people with a passion for classical string instruments jam together deep into the night, and because no one can leave the building, an unexpected creative bond develops between the two. Soon after, Emily Kennedy (cello, voice) and Mark Kleyn (viola) launched their project, Pallmer, and with it, a new kind of chamber pop. Recorded in an old church with a looper, pedals, and a sampler, their first EP, “Grass Garden” (2019), is an auditory testament to the endless possibilities offered by combining classical instruments with modern recording and effects technology. The follow-up, “Quiet Clapping” (2021), was named Recording Of The Year at the 2021 Prix MNB Awards and put Pallmer in the spotlight of an audience that is equally fond of pop and classical music. This year saw the release of “Swimming” (2024), the long-awaited debut album and impressive proof that this project has found its very own musical language.
