Musspell
Like a veil of rain in the sunshine of the last days of summer, the sound of Musspell unfolds between seemingly paradoxical moods. At once both melancholic and mystical, the trio from Cluj Napoca in Romania conjure up idiosyncratic dream pop with an ambiguous atmosphere. Those looking for the right sound for unwinding will find it here, as will those whose minds desire to indulge in existential questions. Central to the music are the elfin voices of Dósa Diána Noémi and Bölöni Anna, which hover around each other while also fitting together like complementary colours. “We pursue a natural, ethereal sound of self-expression,” the duo recently explained. And there’s no doubt that they already achieved this goal with their first EP, “In Between” (2022), which displays a songwriting style that is more than unusual for a project in such early stages of development. It is also unusual how – with their debut album, “Unity All In All” (2023) – they manage to draw from a variety of sources of inspiration that lie somewhere between Warpaint and Angel Olsen while still creating something completely unique. The candles are lit, the incense is ignited, the room is enraptured: The séance has begun.
