Molly Payton
It was the early months of the pandemic when Molly Payton appeared on the British indie music scene with her debut EP, “Mess” (2020). She had landed in London from New Zealand two years earlier, brimming with the dreams and ambitions of an aspiring artist. It wasn’t long before she was able to fulfil them, going on tour with the alt-rock band Palace and being rightly hailed as a new talent by BBC Introducing. Her studio album “Slack” followed a year later and demonstrated not only the singer–songwriter’s vocal virtuosity, but also her stylistic variance, which she is able to harness in making sources of inspiration bubble over. These sources include Jeff Buckley, Joni Mitchell, Happiness, and US indie slacker Alex G. All this and more comes to the fore in her songs, which she often writes on long walks through nature and composes like diary entries. Payton’s concerts are therefore particularly intimate experiences that leave no eye dry.
