Like a swarm of asteroids moving in nebulous rhythms, Limblifter reappear from time to time in the firmament of the alternative music scene. The debut ‘Limblifter’ from 1996 is still one of the products of this rightly hyped decade to have aged well. From that point on, the cult band from Vancouver appeared in varying formations here and there and showed everyone that they could call the tune when they wanted to when it came to alternative rock with a power-pop edge. The most recent examples of this were ‘Pacifik Milk’ (2015) and ‘Little Payne’ (2022), even when unexpected production tweaks led to considerable changes in the band's hook-focussed style with new ideas. But songwriting between soft jangle numbers and towering rock monsters, as well as the unwavering love of breaking with patterns, are still present in the head of mastermind Ryan Dahle. The lyrics are always quirky or cryptic - or both - and are inspired by everything that comes Dahle's way in life. But telling stories is not Limblifter's thing. Instead, they offer up images for the audience to manipulate themselves and provoke idiosyncratic thoughts in the process. Maybe that's why the band has always resisted making all too superficial claims about their history and style. Rightly so: that’s how legends grow.
