Leocardo DiNaprio
Leocardo DiNaprio’s first single – “Sommerluft” (“summer air”) – throbs out of the speakers sounding a little chilly yet also heart-warming. “Cold summer air blows in your face. You want to forget yourself, for a moment”, he sings between a driving cold-wave beat and echoing post-punk guitars. Not only does DiNaprio have a keen sense for cheeky puns, but the DIY producer and singer’s sound is also characterised by cleverness and a knack for the right effects at the right time. On his debut EP, “Stadtgeflüster” (“city whispers”), which was released last year, everything that was good about the New German Wave comes into its own: longing melodies, reduced instrumentation with electronic embellishments, laconic yet deeply meaningful lyrics, voices that sound as if they came from another world. And still, the man manages to make it all sound incredibly fresh and contemporary in songs such as “Spinnennetz” (“spider web”) and “Regen” (“rain”). Of course, the new New German Wave has been here for years – and we were instrumental in its creation. But Leocardo DiNaprio is certainly one of the most interesting representatives of a type of music that could represent the future in our country.
