Our spaces are haunted. Not by ghosts, demons, devils, shadows or ghouls – but by what could have been. What could have been of the world: our future, our schools and institutions, our protests, our freedom movements and our icons. We are haunted by the promise of the future and of utopia; by the promise of a future decontaminated by the whims of capital and business oriented ontologies. Space is a precious commodity, be it in physical, metaphysical, cyberspace or intellectual domains. With their artistic practice, Joana Owona and Dejvi Haxhi want to examine, dissect and analyse these spaces through the lenses of Hauntology, Necropolitics, Psychoanalysis, Heterotopia, Fugitivity and the practice of Refusal. In doing so, they also go in search of new spaces – for subjects whose bodies are rejected by society. In a time of materialised bio-power and bio-economies, it’s never been more important to open up these zones of safety, peace, reflection and, most importantly where the I and the ‘Other’ can at least attempt to become one.
