As a breakneck fusion of the most diverse vibes and influences, H31R’s sound is not only hard to categorise, but also a product of the past as much as the present – and perhaps even the future? In any case, since the release of their first tracks four years ago, the duo from Brooklyn have proven capable of giving East Coast hip-hop – which is primarily dominated by masculinity – a facelift that is as experimental as it is consistent. Beat bassist JWords and rapper Maassai complement each other like two pieces of a puzzle. On their debut, “ve•loc•i•ty” (2020), they demonstrate how easily they can merge their musical backgrounds. Hip-hop collides with jazz, R'n'B with Jersey club, soul with salsa and bachata – all without the highly eclectic productions seeming overloaded in any way. On the contrary: The tracks are often created with the simplest of tools, from the SP-404SX to the Nintendo Switch. With their latest album, “HeadSpace” (2023), H31R deliver the final proof of their artistically established vision of a fresh and undogmatic form of expression for rap music.
