It didn’t take much more than a handful of singles to turn G, Jada, and K-Flo from an ambitious trio with plenty of talent into a phenomenon on every punk-rock playlist in the UK. As GIRLBAND!, the three have a recipe with all the right ingredients to send hook-orientated punk into the new twenties: infectious melody lines, the right amount of indie charm, and jangly guitars in the tradition of Sam Fender. Garnished with vocals that can hold a candle to Fiona Apple or Billy Nomates at any time, numbers such as “Boys With Girls” (2023) and the wonderfully wistful “Heartbreak Town” (2024) are merely harbingers of an upcoming album. Themes ranging from reflections on the past, the disappointed hopes of their hometown of Mansfield, and the essence of what makes us human are exactly what these musicians pour into bittersweet songs. Given the material released by GIRLBAND! so far and the exuberant live qualities that this trio have displayed, we can only assume that we will be hearing a lot more from them in the near future. Firstly, though, we will be hearing from them live on stage with us in Hamburg.
