As singer and frontman of the band DIRK, Jelle Denturck is already a well-established name in the Belgian music scene. Garage rock, noisy indie, and everything alternative have been at least tried out by the quartet, if not fully integrated. But because Denturck also has a melancholic streak, which is reflected above all in his record collection, he had to create another channel for his artistic expression with Dressed Like Boys. Inspired by David Bowie as well as Nina Simone, by Sufjan Stevens as well as Perfume Genius, he creates highly intimate songs about topics that move him as a person and an artist. Personal freedom plays just as much a role as the meaning of friendship or his homosexuality and the discrimination he has faced as a result. He channels these themes musically into a sound that lies somewhere between Wurlitzer and Rhodes, between tape recorder and piano from the 70s, and he brings it all into the present, finding his own signature sound in the process. His gig in Hamburg will also provide a glimpse into the artist’s soul, which is sure to fascinate fans and newcomers alike.
