The Chairs
Although Jing, Zhong, and Benson have known each other since high school, it was not until they graduated that they came together as a trio and founded The Chairs. At that time, it was not yet clear that the three would have a career as some of Taiwan’s most esteemed Mandopop poets – even though their debut album, “Cheers!Land” (2016), already promised greatness in terms of songwriting and instrumental arrangements and they were celebrated for it far beyond their hometown of Taipei. The three musicians produce laid-back, often-thoughtful songs about life and love that – in addition to their charming pop appeal – also draw influences from psychedelic rock and dream pop. In terms of production and storytelling, the sources of inspiration lie in Pink Floyd’s legendary early work and in the Arctic Monkeys, but also in ELO and in urban soft rock. No matter what The Chairs put on the menu musically, it is sure to be an auditory delight. Indeed, they have shown this in myriad new ways over the last few years with albums such as “Real Love Is...” (2020) and “Hey Aries” (2023).
