Buntspecht
With a musical DNA characterised by the desire for the spontaneous and the unexpected and an interest in the ambiguity of life, Buntspecht – the six-piece group from Vienna – began recording in a garden shed that had been converted into a studio. Nevertheless, “Großteils Kleinigkeiten” (2016) turned out to be one of the most exciting Austrian musical products of the year and laid the foundation for a discography that formulated a barely definable stylistic language that lies somewhere between Viennese song and gypsy jazz, baroque pop, and folk. Since then, Buntspecht have also attracted the attention of resourceful record enthusiasts far beyond the borders of the Alpine state – enthusiasts who care deeply about the legacy of the great German-language songwriters. The band present messages from the past, reflections on the present, and promises about the future, which they know how to negotiate in their songs in an ironic and poetic way. Last year saw the release of “An das Gestern, das nie Morgen wurden darfte. Ich warte” (2023) – album number five, which showcases an eclectic sound, multifaceted lyrics, and flawless production. This group of musicians are clearly at the peak of their creative careers.
