Is it possible to whip up a new genre out of nothing and not be laughed at for it? If you can manage that these days, even the entrenched opinion-makers in the digital music journals won’t know what to say. Paul Adamah is living proof that this feat seems entirely possible, even in times of consolidated music publications and the dictates of the majors. As Boko Yout, the Swedish musician, designer, and performance artist has been working for three years now to make something like Afro-grunge socially acceptable. However, his inspirations lie less in the Seattle of the early 90s than in the London of the last twenty years. The much-acclaimed newcomer crosses felt-tight guitars with British trip-hop, indie, alt-pop, and neo-psychedelia to create an unadapted amalgam. A child of his time and yet aware of his musical inspirations, Boko Yout deliberately navigates between retro charm and ultra-fresh sound design away from digital hype machines with singles such as ‘efyo’ (2023) and ‘Ignored’ (2024).
